Haute Homes: Tiny Jewel Box
Admittedly, I’m usually drawn to more neutral tones with pops of color or bold prints…but there’s just something about these très chic and colorful homes that remind us of pretty little jewel boxes, with all kinds of treasures that have been collected over the years…each having a unique story and just waiting to be discovered. We can imagine snuggling up on a chilly fall day on one of these velvet sofas or arm chairs with a fur blanket and good book…a wood burning fireplace would be icing on the cake.
Lauren Conrad’s Beverly Hills Penthouse is filled with flea-market finds, modernist pieces, and cheerful pops of color. Note the bold sofa, rug and accents are balanced here with white walls. (From InStyle’s October 2014 issue.)
Now here’s a man who isn’t afraid of color – Jared Seligman’s vibrant Upper East Side apartment is decked in luxurious jewel tones and layered with rich textures and fabrics. It’s all at once eclectic, cozy and chic:
The gallery wall in the living room mixes traditional portraits with contemporary favorites, like a piece by Jenna Snyder Phillips.
In a historic Distrito Federal home, featured in Architectural Digest España, decorator Dirk Jan Kinet combines unusual European antiques with a chameleon of colors inspired by Mexico’s vibrant culture. We’re kind of obsessed. We love mixing unexpected elements, and Kinet does it so well.
Let loose! Even a tiny one-bedroom apartment van handle bold gestures and vivid hues. Designer Nick Olsen adds vibrant color to a small space in a glamorous Art Deco building in Old Hollywood:

If you frequently suffer from kitchen envy, avert your eyes, because Cameron Diaz’s New York kitchen is delicious. Emerald green cabinets, unlacquered brass countertops and backsplash, cerused ebony-stained floors… it’s cozy, yet total glam.
Here, woodwork is painted a deep, saturated color: Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue. The ceiling is tented with a Michael S. Smith Indian block fabric, Jasper. Upholstered in a blue Schumacher silk velvet very close to the color of the walls, the tufted U-shaped sofa — which is all one piece — is the focal point of this intimate space.
This sitting room is small on space, but big on style. Some tips for decorating small spaces from HomeScapes.com:
“Small rooms need more than one focal point. That way you will dazzle the eye and, rather than thinking how small the space is, you will think how cool the space is.”
“Paint the ceiling out the same colour as the walls. It will make the space a zillion times bigger. Promise!”
“Upscale the furniture, don’t down scale! I think where people go wrong with small rooms is when they choose small furniture – it kind of emphasizes the point even more. Add something super-sized, it will elevate the room.”
